Wide-range Period Control of a Self-oscillating Polymer Gel
English
We achieved wide-range control of the period of the swelling–deswelling self-oscillation of a novel polymer gel by selecting the initial concentration of the Belousov–Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction substrates and the temperature. The gel is composed of a non-thermoresponsive, biocompatible poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) main chain covalently bonded to the ruthenium catalyst of the BZ reaction.
By optimizing the initial substrate concentration, we induced swelling–deswelling self-oscillation at 0.5 Hz — about twenty times faster than the conventional self-oscillating gel. We also showed that the displacement of the oscillation has a trade-off relationship with its period.
