Heteroweave

Nishijin textile is a generic term for pre-dyed, figured textiles produced in Kyoto. It has realized diverse designs and functions by incorporating materials such as foils cut from paper. We integrated functional materials and digital technology into this traditional craft.

Heteroweave integrates functions by weaving different materials into the weft. It exhibits characteristics that are difficult to obtain with conventional Nishijin textiles — color change, superimposition of digital information, and retention of a solid shape — while still following the traditional Nishijin manufacturing process. This shows that various media expressions can be embedded without changing the original design, making it a widely applicable method for functionalizing woven textiles.

本プロジェクトは、筧康明研究室・株式会社細尾・山口情報芸術センター（YCAM）と連携し、西陣織の「箔」に着想を得て、さまざまな異素材を緯糸として織り込み、新たな機能やインタラクティビティを埋め込む織物を制作しています。

周囲の温度で柄が変化する Heteroweave 001、微細なパターンを印刷した紙を織り込み布を映像・音響を操作するインタフェースとして用いる Heteroweave 002、水分含有量で硬度が変化する素材を織り込み書き換え可能な立体形状を構成する Heteroweave 003 を実作しました。素材特性と西陣特有の織構造を掛け合わせ、人間の身体から建築スケールまで、新しい布との関わり方を探求しています。
